Hi everyone – sorry for the lack of updates. The satellite internet is completely unreliable onboard – when I had time to get on the net, the satellite connection was down and then when the connection was working, I had no time so I haven’t been updating and now we have just 8 days to go – EEK!

更新していなくてごめんなさい！衛星によるインターネット接続は頼りにできず、時間がある時は繋がらない状態だったり、繋がる時は忙しくて更新ができませんでした。そして日本に到着するまであと８日間しかありません！

I just wanted to update some photos – these are some more recent ones from the last couple of ports – Manzanillo & Ensenada in Mexico; Corinto in Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal/Tikal Ruins in Guatemala and some from onboard.

I don’t know if there will be time to update more before we arrive in Japan but just one last thing – we will be arriving in Yokohama and not Harumi as originally scheduled on the 20th! The boat arrives at 08:00 but we probably won’t be able to get off until about 3pm. Back on land soon!

日本に到着するまでにまた更新ができるかは分からないけど、最後にもう一つ。１０月２０日は予定の晴海埠頭ではなく、横浜の大桟橋に到着します！到着は朝の８時だけど、スタッフが降りるのは午後の３時ぐらいです。もうすぐ陸です！

Belated post – [update from one week ago in Greece!]

Hi everyone! This is a crazy update of photos – I am currently on the deck of Peace Boat in Piraeus, Greece and we are about to depart for Naples, Italy. There is free wireless internet here at the port and we are about to leave so I am just updating a huge stack of photos (not in order!) and that’s it for now! I am not going to have time to add captions or explanations or anything but the ones from Greece are from the Parthenon with the beautiful blue sky! Had a great day out with Kouyou and now we are headed to Naples!

Work on the ship is great – busy sometimes, not busy at others – it really goes up and down but I am really having the most amazing experience of my life – as P-chan (the GET English teaching program coordinator) said, “it’s the best thing that ever ruined your life” – I wrote this down when she said it at orientation but I have crossed out the word “ruined” and now it says “it’s the best thing that ever changed your life” – so here’s to changing lives and living each day for that day!

Naples here we come!

[p.s. since writing this post a week ago we have been to Naples, Marseilles and Barcelona and arrive in Casablanca, Morocco tomorrow! I will get around to writing updates at some point I hope!]

久々の更新です！しかも時間がないため、主に写真をアップするための更新です！今は出航直前で、船のデッキで港のターミナルから発信されている無料ワイヤレスインターネットでブログを更新しています。次の港はナポリです！

写真の順番は関係ありません！そして一つ一つのコメントを書く時間がないので、ごめんなさい！でも今日光洋（こうよう）と一緒にパルテノン神殿に行って写真たくさん撮って、空もすごく綺麗で、これからナポリに向かいます！

船での仕事もうまくいっていて、忙しい時もあれば暇なときもあります。ピースボートに乗って人生は変わる！もう変わっている！乗ってよかった！！

今からナポリへ！！

[追伸：この更新を書いてから、ナポリ・マルセイユそしてバルセロナにも行きました！明日はモロッコのカサブランカに着きます。まだまだ更新しなければならない情報はありますが、そのうちできると思います☆]

So I haven’t been able to update my blog much since getting on Peace Boat (as you can see!). It’s been the busiest two weeks of the last few years of my life but in a good way. I don’t think I’ve spent this many hours running around doing one thing and enjoyed it so much for a long time!

We’ve been to Da Nang, Vietnam (August 8th) and Singapore (August 11th) so far and we arrive in Kochin/Cochin/Kochi (there are many variations of the name) tomorrow (actually today because the internet was down last night and I couldn’t update this properly!). I’m going as an interpreter on the tour that goes to the backwaters of Alleppey (about an hour and a half from the port) where we’ll go on a canal cruise and see the famous Chinese fishing nets of Kochin (see pic). More about how the day was to come!

In Da Nang, it was a crazy, energetic day of exchange between the many young (and some not so young) participants of Peace Boat – around 200! – and 200 members of the Da Nang Youth Federation. This group of 400 people were matched up in pairs for the day and after travelling in bus-loads of around 40 people to the Da Nang Youth Federation building, Peace Boat participants were whisked away on scooters and motor bikes by their new Vietnamese friends for several hours to get to know each other and experience intercultural exchange first hand.

When we (the CCs* and staff) met up with the pairs at the Vietnamese House restaurant for lunch, it was evident that even in such a short time that most people had bonded with their partner which was wonderful to see because each pair was communicating with a limited amount of language. It’s amazing how far gestures and the wish to communicate can go – you don’t need language to communicate. You just need to want to get the message across and that can be more than enough.

After lunch we all went to the Youth Federation building and the festivities began. Just imagine a sweltering 30 degree and 80%+ humidity day, a hall with no air-con and fill it with 400+ people dancing and singing! It was, well, HOT! The Vietnamese kids did a dance, the Peace Boat side did a dance, there was singing, more dancing, games, people made Ao Dai (traditional Vietnamese dresses), more dancing and singing and just an amazing energy! I m sure you will be able to see that from the photographs! They even prepared a birthday cake for all the people who had birthdays in August and had 400 people sing happy birthday!

It was such a short time in Vietnam but it was filled with smiles and laughter and positive energy. I am putting a bunch of photos up – would you believe that all of this took place in just 8 hours? What a day!

昨日は妹のあかりちゃんとピースボートの見学会に行きました! 初めて実際に船を見たんだけど、とにかくでっかい! 月曜日は晴海港から出航するけど、昨日と今日は横浜の大桟橋に停泊していました☆ 外から見ても大きいんですけど、中に入ったらどんどんどんどん大きくなっていく気がして、船内が分かるようになるのが楽しみです!(^o^)/
Yesterday I went with my Japanese sister Akari to see Peace Boat – it was the first time I’ve ever seen Peace Boat with my own eyes and it’s huge! We leave from Harumi Port on Monday but the ship was docked at the Oosanbashi Pier in Yokohama for Friday and Saturday. The ship is big from the outside but seemed to get bigger and bigger the more we walked around inside! I’m looking forward to getting to know the ship so it’s not a maze anymore!

Moving! 引越し！

いや～こんなに早くまた引越しになるとは思わなかったですね（汗）　でもピースボートに行っている間、今住んでいる部屋の家賃はとても払えないし、帰ってきてからも難しいので部屋を引き払ってから旅に出ます！しかし、引越しが苦手です。。　なぜならば、単純に荷物が多いです。前よりはマシになったと思いますが、もっともっと減らしたいです！引越しするたび減るなら１年に１回引越ししようかな～　笑

引越しの準備しながら、ピースボートに乗るための荷造りをします☆まぁ、同時並行でやってるとなんだかんだいって楽かなというとても甘い考えを持っています☆　明日の夕方までに主な準備が終わっているように、今夜はがんばるぞ！

I really didn’t think I’d be moving house again so soon… But I can’t keep paying the rent where I’m living right now while I’m away on Peace Boat and I won’t be able to afford it once I’m back so I’m moving out of this apartment before I set off on my travels! I really don’t like moving house though…It’s simply because I have too much stuff…I don’t have as much stuff as I used to and I think I’m getting better but I want to have even less stuff. If I have less stuff each time I move then maybe I should move once a year! Ha – yeah right….hmmmm

So I’m getting my things for Peace Boat ready while I’m packing up my apartment – it’s quite convenient doing it at the same time – I think I’m underestimating the amount of time it’ll take but the plan is to have most of it done by tomorrow evening so tonight is going to be a big night! Here we go!!

One week and counting 残り１週間

In one week there will be over a thousand participants on the 70th anniversary cruise of Peace Boat heading for Da Nang, Vietnam. There is so much to do between now and then but it will just have to get done somehow so here goes – to the last week on land!

１週間にはピースボートの第７０回の記念クルーズには１０００人以上の参加者が乗船し、ダ・ナン（ベトナム）へと向かいます。今日からそれまでの間にやることは本当にたくさんありますが、何とか終わらせるしかないので、陸での最後の１週間、がんばるぞ！イエイ！

Peace Boat – communication coordinator

So, I’m about to go on Peace Boat as an volunteer interpreter – there’s a whopping 15 of us for the 70th voyage (the most there’s ever been to date I think). We’re not actually called interpreters onboard – rather we are called ‘communication coordinators’. The reason for this is that it’s not just interpreting that we do. It’s a whole range of things but basically our goal is to facilitate communication and generally make sure that things run smoothly for the participants. In short, we are called ‘CCs’. It reminds me of a kind of potato chip (crisps if you come from the UK!) that I used to like as a kid – CC in my world stands for ‘corn chip’. So from now on as a CC I’m either a communication coordinator or a corn chip…hopefully the participants won’t think of me as the latter! (I guess it will depend on how well I do!)

もうすぐボランティア通訳としてピースボートに乗船します。第７０回の世界一周の船旅のためには通訳が１５人もいます(今まで人数が一番多いかな？）。船内では「通訳」と呼ばれず、「コミュニケーション・コーディネーター」と呼ばれています。その理由はきっと「通訳」だけではなく、その他の全般のコミュニケーションを図ることが基本的な目的であるからであり、参加者にとって船旅が円満に進行するようにすることが私たちの仕事でもあるのです。省略すると「CCs」と呼ばれています。子供のころによく食べていたポテト・チプスの名前と一緒で、私は「CC」を聞くと頭の中に「コーン・チップ」をポンと思い浮かべます。というわけで、私はこれから「CC」としてコミュニケーション・コーディネーターまたはコーン・チップのどちらかになってしまいます・・・・参加者が私のことを「コーン・チップ」として考えないことを祈っています（仕事に対する努力に寄るでしょうけれども！）。

Anyway it’s T minus 10 days and counting! And in that time I have to pack up my apartment into boxes in order to move out, pack my bags to travel around the world in 80 days and study for all the interpreting! And then the journey begins! I’m ready for anything so bring it on!

とりあえず、出発まで１０日間になりました！出発までにマンションを引き払うために荷物を箱に詰めること、８０日間の世界一周の船旅のための荷造りを終えること、そして様々通訳するために勉強をすること！そして旅が始まります！覚悟しているから何でもかかってこい！
